You have to unplug the drives if you want to power them down (and I would recommend that). They require an external power supply, and they never turn off, even if you shut down your computer. There is a 2 year limited warranty. The biggest drawback to owning these drives is that there isn't a power button. They include an adapter with your initial purpose, and you can buy additional adapters to connect to different interfaces. I bought them specifically because of the different adapters and interfaces that are available with these drives. The drive cases are made of plastic, and could break if they fall - but desktop drives usually don't move around. Specs: 3.5" Desktop Drive Speed: 7200rpm Plug and Play Interface: Adapter required (included with purchase) Adapters Available: USB 2.0, USB 3.0, eSATA, Firewire 800 Data Transfer Speed: Varies Format: NTFSReview: I own 2 of these drives, the 1.5TB and the 2TB.
